Blending programming languages to enhance your website

March 8th, 2010

Website design is both an art and a science. It takes much more than fancy images and graphics to make a visitor to your site believe he’s browsing a quality website.

That’s where value added services come in.

The visitor must feel that he or she is benefiting from your website when investing their time surfing it. The cost of time spent browsing your website for information on a product or service (also called opportunity cost) is the price the visitor pays, instead of investing the same time sourcing information by browsing another website.

That is where having an excellent web developer comes in. Someone trained in a variety of web languages. The basic mark-up language for web pages is HTML or now evolved into XHTML. This is the basic mark-up language for the web. It is an easy to understand language and allows you to link pages, show images and even build simple forms.

Next in line is Javascript. When you start implementing Javascript into your website, you move out of the domain of static websites and move into the rich domain of dynamic websites. Javascript uses client side scripting. It brings a lot of great functionality to your website. For example, should the server be responding slowly, Java will step in and display your site page.

Another interesting feature is cookies written in Javascript. Ever wonder how websites remember you when you visit a page again? Well that’s a cookie written in JavaScript. It captures your login information to facilitate your logging in again.

Another very important language that should be added to the mix is PHP. It is almost any good website’s essential framework architecture. If you’ve heard of Wordpress, or even have a Wordpress blog, then you know that at it’s core Wordpress is powered by PHP.

PHP has many functionalitites. One of its essential features is the way it’s able to communicate with a Mysql database(or other databases) on the server. It essentially reads and writes information to the database, from text filled out by visitors to the website.

Last but not least is ActionScrip.  This language is used within Adobe Flash. This software gives you all those fancy animated intros on a website. With lots of bells and whistles ActionScript is sure to “Wow” any visitior to your website.

Websites: A business necessity!

March 6th, 2010

In today’s technologically driven world, the internet encompasses all business activities. Having a website is like purchasing property to construct a building for your business activities.

It is similar to owning property in cyberspace in the form of a website.

At its very heart, any good business needs a marketing strategy to target consumers in order to achieve a rate of return. Website’s today are probably the singular most important avenue of communication for your company’s marketing strategy.

It is a low cost and efficient way to advertise your product and service mix to a global consumer segment. This brings us to the world of electronic commerce. A simple addition of an e-commerce application and a merchant account leads to direct sales with your customers. That is how powerful and unique it is as a marketing tool.

No intermediaries, no middle men. You are in a direct relationship with your customers, selling to them and handling their feedback.

If you want your business to claim a larger share of a market that is rife with other competitors, a website is essential. If consumers are not made aware of your company and its products or services, the best branding strategies in the world will fail you.

In addition, one can utilize their website for project management, close physical distances with staff, as a CRM, and a myriad of other options.  A website can be used not only externally, but internally to improve business processes.

With print advertising on its way out, and a significant share of consumers switching from television to the internet for entertainment and information, having your company website is essential for growth. If you are not on the world-wide-web, you are nowhere.
